We all have our own special morning rituals. Whether it’s waking to take a nice jog or flying from bed to the shower, it’s an important part of the day. It’s what sets you up for a good and happy day …

For my four-year-old son, the morning routine involves bounding from bed as soon as he starts to wake — even if that means still rubbing his eyes whilst walking into my home office to say good morning. For my daughter, that means singing her ABCs on repeat until my son wakes.

It’s adorable.

My morning coffee is really important to me. It’s the make-or-break moment of my daily routine. A good cup means excellent things for the day—a more relaxed me who is alert and ready. The thing is, I hate actually making coffee. So, for awhile, I stuck with those single serving pods that you use a special machine to brew. Then, my wonderful husband took up the task of daily coffee brewing.

Yes, he’s wonderful.

And in the once-in-awhile case where he forgets to brew me some coffee? Well, then I have to improvise (read: pack the kids up and rush out for a cuppa). A mom’s got needs …

Right now I get up at 6:30 with my 11-year-old son. He has to leave to catch the bus at about 7:10, which gives us just enough time to sit at the dining-room table together and enjoy a cup of tea and some toast and a nice (if sleepy) chat. After he leaves, I finish the rest of my tea and maybe read, check my e-mail, or just enjoy the quiet. At 7:30 it’s time to get the younger kids up–I get out their clothes and put them beside them on the bed and then walk from room to room making sure they actually get up! After my 5 and 10 year olds are gone, the baby and Owen (3) and I lounge around, do the breakfast dishes, read stories and watch a little morning TV. Getting the younger kids up and off can be stressful, but it’s so much better when I’ve had a few minutes to sit in the quiet before everyone’s up.
